Caius is gathering as much information as he can before striking out to avenge the death of the Cullens. He's not doing it to avenge them so much as he's doing it for Aro.
It would be stupid for him to rush in blindly before he knew as much as possible. Whatever destroyed a coven of seven vampires must be very dangerous.

Here, Aro has learned of the demise of the Cullens, including Carlisle, after sending the Guardsmen to check up on Bella's status as a human.
It's explained/implied heavily later what the guard was doing there to begin with.
Aro has quite an unusual interest and attachment to Carlisle, and by extension, the family. Allowing Carlisle and company to get away with things other vampires would have been killed for. Why else would have had allowed Edward, Alice, and human Bella to leave Volterra back when Edward stupidly tried to suicide by vampire?
