I write, and prefer to read, Alt Universe stuff. Exclusively. I play with humans and Vamps. You will never read a canon rehash of Edward and Bella's story from me. In fact, you will most likely not see our star-crossed teens as the main focus of what I write. There are just too many other truly spectacular fics out there that play with the comely twosome that I don't feel as though I could do them justice as central characters.

My favorite plaything is Emmett. In my mind he's full of possibility and heinously underserved as a character in canon. This belief was probably the central organizing factor for me when I began reading and writing again.

I see so much potential in the second tier Cullens, as well as in the other vampires we've barely met. Play with them! Mix it up: how do these characters relate to each other, make different aspects of their basic personality traits fire? If they had two or three sketchy comments made about them that might provide a clue to a fully-realized character, why not dig in there and fluff them out, give them a fully realized life on the screen/page? It's fun! It should be fun; that's where I find my own happy little corner where my Emmett dolls await and I can turn the gameboard over, shaking until my heart is content.

My take on writing fanfic is the use of familiar characters moved around like game pieces. I like to read and write stories that challenge the dominant paradigm - be it in pairings, setting, circumstance. I often try to flip the canon characteristics of a character over to the other side of the coin and see what is there , place a character in a unique and specific setting and try to imagine how they play within those circumstances, or invent a new character that changes the Cullen family dynamic.

As I was told recently, I like popping balloons, turning the kaleidoscope; No matter to me if I'm doing the popping and turning or someone else has the honors. I appreciate writers who challenge the status quo and try to do the same. This isn't an assertion that what I'm doing is particularly inventive or will solve some ancient mystery. I use 'that' too much and couldn't place a comma correctly if it came with a map and compass. It is what it is - escapism. I happen to like my escapism about six foot five, two fifty-ish, with curly brownish black hair and big capable hands. Blue, amber or even Chianti-red eyes may apply depending on circumstance - and, of course, dietary restrictions.

Admittedly, I'm not a technical whiz but I do pre-read for several great stories now. I love to talk about the various aspects of writing and the creative process in general.
