Oh my, Bella is so clueless and Edward is so very careful with his hints, obviously too careful, because Bella don't get them. But I can see why he is that way he is, they have a lot of baggage and I assume his greatest fear is to slow her down and be a burden for her.
I think Bella shattered all his hopes with her flippant and thoughtless comments and Edward's just hiding behind his harsh tone und bitter words. They have both hurt each other without intention.
But anyway she needs to sort out her feelings, and I hope the guy downstairs is Jasper to help her with that.

I have to admit I don't like his proposal, but I assume it's necessary for Bella so that she can build her relationship with Edward without her parents come to know. It's a little immature but I think it's mutually the easy way out.
Especially if James is really not straight. And I hope this is the beginning for a lot of progress between Bella and Edward.
