I agree that we don't give enough thought to how much safer our lives are now. My own mother caught scarlet fever as a child; she began to recover and then relapsed with rheumatic fever that attacked her heart. She was 7, was given Last Rites and took a year to recover. I was blessed to be her daughter! She was wiser than believable, had more pure faith than any 10 people I know, and had an immense capacity to love. The things I learned from her are with me still and I pass them along to my daughter - Anne, names for her.
Peter may surprise them all yet! I loved your update!

This is sad but I know it was a fact of life back then. Loosing Joseph had to be so hard on everyone. I look forward to seeing what they found out about Peter. If he did loose his hearing his family will be there to help him though it and live the best life he can. Great job...thanks so much! I loved opening my email to see there was more of this story. I love that you revisited us with your beautiful story. I can't imagine growing up in the old west and having to do what was done to survive. Doctors were always pompous, the whole god complex thing...and then ask for payment! I would have hit him. I’ve gotten to this point in your story and I have to go back and give thanks to you for previous chapters.
BUT although this is old news about the boycott I also participated, at the time, as I don’t think grown women, who are the bulk of the readers of FFNet, need to be dictated to, by a group of puritanical teenagers.
Rules are not rules in the case of a medium such as this. This medium should evolve to support views of the majority that support it. FFNet let this go till they become so powerful that publishing companies based their $ interest on how many review an author had on this site. “Master of the Universe”, point in case. Oh sure she eventually got kicked off but by that time she was popular enough to direct her fans to her own site.
There are other mediums to publish but FFNet remains the” it and a bit” but does not deserve the power and has let down those that made it famous.

I am from Tennessee myself, upper East. "Most" people there do not still talk "hillbilly", but some still do. It took me a while anyway to really get into the dialogue and the hillbilly wording. But I have really enjoyed this story. I am in awe of how much effort it must have taken to make everything so appropriate for the times and the people. And I gotta say that

(hopefully, not the end) I have truly enjoyed the wonderful adventures of Ed, Izzy, and Jack --filled with lots of love, laughter, and tears. I felt like the story was so real, you are a very talented writer! I am glad they made it to Texas, hope Texas will continue to treat the Cullen Family well and you can write more in the future.
