OMG Bella's explanation of her essay made me want to cry and did in fact bring tears to my eyes, you could just feel her giving up and loosing herself I hope Edward wakes up fast!
Esme's garden, I can't even speak how that women survived and endured is beyond me.
I was left with a feeling of sadness after reading this chapter, I guess because of the two steps back for Bella and Edward and hearing Esme's story, I so want a happy ending for them at the end of this they deserve it that's for sure, all of them in fact (except Carlisle of course I want him to die a long drawn out painfull death :-)

I love the reason for Esme's gardens. I had pondered long and hard, but her explanation spoke much better than my thoughts did.
Bella's essay was heartrending. Carlisle & Charlie as the snipers, Edward as the bullet, Bella as the targeted American... ouch. When she said it was her goodbye, it made me cry. She's been through so much, and the thought that Edward is regressing, even in private - she's right. While she understands it's because of what they're going through with having to pretend, it doesn't make it right.
Thank you for this. Thank you for Esme being able to help Bella find some hope.

Excellent chapter, Mic. That is kind of what I figured the garden was all about. Although it would have been interesting if it was a mass grave or Esme grew poisonous plants in order to off Carlisle it just wouldn't have been realistic.
I'm so glad Bella and Esme had this time to chat. As bad as Bella think Edward is he is nothing compared to Carlisle, so I think it strengthened Bella to see that Esme survived and so can she.
I felt so defeated for Bella when she spoke of her essay and the fact that she thought she was loosing her Edward. I hate that she still can't communicate with him truthfully (ie. the 2 essays) but maybe that will change now that Marcus and Demetri are gone. She broke through to Edward before and just needs to continue to work with him.
Thanks so much for this great chapter and for continuing to share your awsome story. Can't wait to see what happens next.

It has been there right from the start, looking at everyone that comes and goes and at us. Esme has copped, has survived by putting all her feelings, good and bad, sad and happy in her garden. it's the proof she is still alive and fighting, just as every flower, bush, tree and plant in it.
She has tore down and part of her destroyed, but she never gave up, she is still there among the paths and leaves. She has taught each of her daughters that they have to live this life but not give up. Bella is the last one to share the knowledge, but she was the first to go and brake the mold and chains.
Bella thinks she is loosing herself again because she was scared. She hasn't realized Edward is just as scared as she is and that each one is handling things the only way they know how and can.
Are things going to be perfect from now on? It would be great but I don't think so. The perfect thing now will be Bella's will to keep fighting for Edward and herself, and of course Esme.

Ah thank god I finally got to read this chapter. I'm a little upset though, "Writing would be my garden until my children came." Gah, that frustrates me! I want Bella to fight for a real life and get to go to college and have all those things. Just living until she has children doesn't seem like a HEA to me. Also Edward slipping into old ways? Another big sad face.
I'm starting to maybe think what I was hoping for is unrealistic? I've always hoped that Edward would finally become 'normal' like he was seeming to and allow Bella a real life, like college, and that Carlisle would get his comupance. I still think retribution is in order for Carlisle. There can't ever be a HEA where he gets off scott free.
Anyway, despite my frustrations, thank you very very much for the update. I've followed this story for so long now and I just love it :)

don't give up hope for the happy ending just yet. Right now Bella is so beaten down because of the stress of Marcus & Demetri being there that she feels like giving up would be easier than fighting. Bella & Edward didn't get a lot of time to solidify their new beginning before Carlisle struck this blow at them. They're still on shaky ground. Give them time.

Edward is still learning to change and like the girls told her, change takes time and some things will be easier to change than others. Everything is so ingrained in Edward and they were working on chipping away at it a piece at a time. With Marcus & Demetri showing up though it put a halt to Edward's progress and he easily reverted back to some old patterns. don't give up on him yet. Bella is seeing things thru the eyes of a 17 yr old who is still insecure in Edward's love and the pressures of the latest threats. She's giving up right now in desperation instead of fighting. She's taking the easy way out. Don't give up on her either. If it was easy, it wouldn't be real.

This chapter made me ill (not your writing, but the Carlisle flash back, of course! lol) It kills me to hear Bella talk about Edward regressing, she seems so unhappy right now. I'm kind of going back to just wanting her to leave and go to college and be "normal" and not worrying about Edward. Hmmm.... did that cop in Phoenix give her his card if she needed to call? Maybe she could use a payphone at school to call him to help somehow..... She isn't adopted by Carlisle anymore, so if she could just ditch her cell phone so they can't track her and find a way to escape. As much as I would have liked a bazuka buried under the dirt, I think that is a good explanation for her secret. It was a focal point of love which was kind of alluded to in other chapters when they discussed which girl was what plant or animal so that they could have a conversation w/o the guys know what they were talking about. Such a sweet chapter between Bella & Esme. I thought Bella's bullet analogy was very insightful. I hope that they can still pull thru. It worries me that she was going to give up. I am curious to see EPOV on the situation to see how he was viewing it & if he really is slipping back into old habits. Cannot wait for the next chapter :)

I read part of this story on another site. I'm please to have found it again.. I did always wonder how things turned out for Bella and Edward. Does Carlise ever get his revenge on Charlie though Bella. Will Edward protect her from his father and in turn seperate from him. Does Esme finally get free from Carlise hold. So I must say the addition of Renee's POV is priceless. The last line made me cry. I was always suspcious of how Charlie got word Renee had died.
