“Beautiful,” I say when I approach her, as she works in the dirt of the flower bed she started with my mother. She stops and turns to me and I give her time, knowing she is going to talk to me now.

“Dr. Banner thinks I have been suppressing and curtailing my anger. I’m starting to think that he’s right. I’m just so angry right now, but mainly I’m mad at myself.”

I frown and tilt my head in question at her.

“Edward, I let them—I let them treat me that way. I was always trying to please them. I never asked for anything other than their time. I would always say it was fine, when they forgot my birthday, or anything that was connected to me. I let Charlie push me out of his life. I would always sit back and pretend that didn’t kill me to see him call Leah his princess, or listen to him tell her he was proud of her and loved her. I would say it was me that was to blame for that. I was the broken one. That there must be something wrong with me, and I wasn’t worthy of their love. I would always say it was fine, when they forgot my birthday, or anything that was connected to me. I let Charlie push me out of his life. I would always sit back and pretend that didn’t kill me to see him call Leah his princess, or listen to him tell her he was proud of her and loved her. I would say it was me that was to blame for that. I was the broken one. That there must be something wrong with me, and I wasn’t worthy of their love.
