This was a great, great chapter. It is good to learn that Christian (and Taylor) realized quite soo that Ana was acting under duresse. And, btw, I have just discovered TheGame of Thrones, my son gave me a memory stick with the first 3 seasons. I have bought the books, so Ican know what happen next. It is not -for-kids fantasy, not YA, thanks God.

I got 4 alerts for chap. 40. TWCS must have problems.

This said the chapter was good. You know I am not particularly drawn to Taylor, but I loved the side glimpses of Ana and Christian I got.

Are you continuing the other side stories? I hope so.

Yes, sorry about the multiple alerts - the site kept telling me it wasn't loading. Grr! Yes, I'll be getting back to the other stories now. Thanks for staying with me, Camilla : ) jx

I think the more understanding was always Edward, putting up (in Eclipse) with things he should have not. Here he is coldly angry in a very satisfying way.

Author's Response:

Camilla11,

You know, I do agree with you. Maybe my husband is rubbing off on me. Don't tell him I told anyone - but he watches the movies with me and he'll yell at Jacob, "Ahhh don't put up with that man! C'mon!" But I am in agreement with you Edward was way too understanding in Eclipse. I rather liked that he pulled the whole "Mrs. Cullen" thing at the campsite. Jacob needed to know. Anyways, while I do try to keep my Edward truer to cannon - I for sure felt that after nine months away he wouldn't be in the mood to be overly accomidating. He gave them space, allowed them to talk, but when she said "no" he came barreling in like a Terminator. Haha!

Thank you for the review and hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

PP
Based on X-Men movies, a bit of the 90s cartoon. Jean Grey/Phoenix returns after saving everyone at Alkali Lake...changed.  Scott is dead and Logan attempts to connect with her. Logan and Jean have one night, Jean disappears and joins the Brotherhood and gives birth to a baby girl. Logan’s child.

The mutant war forces Jean to sacrifice herself. With Professor X presumed dead, there is no one leading and holding the X-Men together, Storm can only do so much. Logan has disappeared, grief stricken at the loss of Jean, at his hands and wanders the globe.

Jean’s baby is found, presumed abandoned and turned over to foster care. The child was nearly two years old when she was discovered deep in a forest hideaway with no identification, she barely spoke, but she was strong and her eyes showed that she was wise, intelligent, seeing. The authorities posted signs and made TV appearances pleading for someone to come forward and claim the little beauty that had been dubbed Bella. Her deep, soulful brown eyes seemed to peer into your very core. There was nothing that those who care for her would not do.

This is her story - learning, growing, understanding who and what she is.

This is very much a story about Bella, and I do explain everyone's abilities, when needed. I also provide a bit of background on everyone. And time wise, when is the story happening?  Before or after the newborn army?

Uh uh is Charlie going to die?

Since I am a nerd like that, I ask about the realistic possibility of the wedding to happen. Bella is a minor, so in order to marry she needs parental consent, right? But Charlei had custody (exclusive?), so only his consent was needed. Is that so? Finally I doubt it all could be accomplished in a day,  it is not Reno or Vegas but the State of Washington, but maybe it is possible.

Author's Response: I did look up the laws of the state, though I may have misinterpreted them. As far as I can tell with parental consent (either parent) a minor may marry. The three day waiting rule may be waived by a judge if there are extenuating circumstances... Such as someone being deployed to a war zone etc. I made the judge a friend of Charlie so that he would be happy to waive the wait just to piss Renee off:p

Very enlightening conversation for Bella. She now should be much less childish.

About the Third Wife: the story never convinced me. Why sìdid she plant the knife in her heart. Had she done it to her harm the blood would have distracted the vampire all the same and the wife would have survived.

I so like it when the result is not achieved by a bloodbath and still the Volturi have to back down (the same in my fic The fleeting moment). I loved BD for this reason and thought that it was evident that it had been written by a woman.

Author's Response:

You're right.  A man would never have a peaceful resolution if he could have a big fight instead.  Then again, one of my stories does start out ten years after BD, when the Volturi return and they do have a war.  I also have a sneaking suspicion, that if the Cullens really threw themselves into a fight with other vampires, it would change them.

Why would you cut? it is one of the best chapters! The glimpse of Edward as the supreme predator he also is was an incredibly exciting piece. Then the way Sam unravels the truth is total perfection.

Author's Response:

I've been trying to cut anything that doesn't move the story.  I'd planned to do a summary of the day, maybe as Kaylee told her mom about it, and then keep Sam's discovery about Edward.  Some readers don't like "fluff" and the fair had a lot of fluff.

Sorry to hear about your second cold of the season.  It stinks when our bodies don't behave the way we think they should.  I used to get a lot more colds, but I've discovered that I've got allergies that have the same symptoms.  I take an allergy medication when I feel a tickle at the back of my throat, and usually that keeps me from getting sick.  Once I start coughing though, it's usually here to stay.

The Quileutes have a history where they were nearly wiped out by a vampire.  I guess I can understand some of their issues.  At least the Volturi didn't show up.  Seeing what happened to Bella would have been proof that Chip was dangerous and needed to be destroyed.  I actually had to change the story from what I had originally.  I'd had Edward make the call to Leah, to come and take Chip to safety.  In this edit I realized Edward never would have done such a thing, not with his family there, and not considering how dangerous he believes the Quileutes are.  Having someone watch the house seemed a lot more reasonable.

I'd imagine Rosalie didn't do much cooking herself, and if she did, it wasn't in a modern kitchen.  She probably never even thought of spoiled food or bacteria.  I don't picture her watching cooking shows like Esme would.  The setting and all the elegant touches would have been her thing.  I could really imagine her carving a radish into a rose, or artfully arranging petit fours, all while wearing an apron and high heels.

I had forgotten how good this chapter was. However all that dolls ... creepy. I visited a nunnery in Madrid,  where in the past the nuns were pincesses and noble born ladies. Now it is a museum and one of things they show you is a dolls' collection. Well, not exactly dolls, they were baby Jesuses and for each one the nuns embroiderd camisoles and made lovely garments. I could taste the desperation and yernings of women who probably had no vocation to speak of and craved motherhood ....

Author's Response:

I think a lot of porcelan dolls are creepy.  It's hard to do faces, especially teeth, and not make them look inhuman, or demonic.  I think Rosalie had a fantasy of how her life should have turned out.  I wanted the dolls to reflect that idea of perfection that never quite lives up to expectations.

Your comments about the nunnery, and "tasting the desperation and yearnings of women who ... craved motherhood," have stuck with me.  Being a mother is the one thing I wouldn't trade for anything.  Considering how women used to be pressured into becoming nuns, it's a sobering thought that they had to give up something so coveted.  Must have been cold comfort to sew clothes for a baby they'd never get to hold.

I loved the very serious conversation inside all the fluff.

As for publishing, I did a big rewrite of one of my fics, (it was mostly original characters and no Cullens to start with). Then I slowly started to propose it around to small American publishers. No luck so far but I have more to try. (It is in English - Italian publishers routinely ask for money, unless you have connections and are famous already. I have a short story up for an award but the competions is extreme).

I might write a new story, no vamps this time, Ancient history and sci fi)

Author's Response:

Good luck on the publishing front.  I thought about going that route with one of my own, but publishing has changed a lot in the last ten years.  These days, even with a publisher, you could still get stuck with a lot of the hard work yourself.  Even published writers are left doing much of the promoting of their books themselves, while publishers take a big chunk of the profits.  I myself am going to try electronic publishing.  I've got one novel written and edited to the best of my ability, but I'm worried about putting my name on something with so much sex and profanity.  I've got a second novel that needs a bit of rewriting and editing to be ready, and I've got an AU Twilight story I could rewrite to be totally original.  Three novels, and not one I'd feel comfortable publishing.  So, I'm working on a fourth, and I really think this one will break the ice.

Ancient history and sci-fi?  I would be interested in reading that.

Thanks for following my story and letting me know something was wrong.  When I posted chapter 8 I got an error message.  I tried two more times to post it, and got the same error message.  In the manage stories it looked like the chapter didn't post, but when I pulled up the story, it showed it had been updated three times, all with the same chapter!  So I tried to delete the last chapter, and it wiped out the whole story -- everything!  I sent a message to the admin, and they said they don't keep back-ups, and I'd have to start all over.  So... I've lost my first 22 reviews, my first thousand reads, and whatever those five coffee cups stand for.  Live and learn, I guess.  This still feels better than losing everything from ffnet; at least this was my mistake.

Author's Response:

I wrote this story for those who want the canon couple to stay together.  I've written two others with different pairings, but one happened long before Bella was born, and the other happened after the death of Edward.  I just can't see a way to write a break-up between these two that makes sense; if you're willing to give your life for someone and turn your back on everything you know, then that's not something  you walk away from -- ever.  As to Pattinson and Oedipus... maybe.  I chose Oedipus because of the older woman/young man in literature.  There really are not that many stories with that dynamic.

I remember loving the lesson in vampire physiology - Canon-like and utterly convincing. I likewd to read it again. I too subscribe to vamps' fertility in my stories. Some authors maintain that condoms would immediately dissolve, but it doesnt make sense, because they can use contact lenses, which work for a few hours.

Author's Response:

Thanks again.  That fertility issue is one of those things most of us who write for Twilight have had to tackle.  I've written it a couple different ways myself.  Here, they use condoms because the little swimmers don't die.  In another story, I wrote that there was enough venom to make condoms unreliable, though they work at first.  In that one, the venom was the risk, as well as pregnancy.  I've even written that the females were fertile, if they could remove an egg and find a hybrid surrogate.  What's funny is that most vampire stories typically choose one route, either they're using supernatural magic, or they rely on strange science.  Meyer didn't choose.

I've heard that Martin likes to kill off his characters.  I've watched one season, but then we cancelled cable and I didn't get to see what happens after that.  Personally, I'm not a fan of killing off characters.  I'm a believer that anything can happen in a story, but if a writer can kill any character at any time, it sort of ruins the trust I have in them.  If I can't trust the writer, I won't invest in the characters.  I am enjoying the books so far.  I like how the sex isn't so gratuitious as it is in the TV version.

Author's Response:

You're absolutely right; writing in installments is a different beast than writing a novel that will be read cover to cover.  I wrote an original story, and posted on fp.  Now that I'm editing it to e-publish, I'm having to get rid of the cliffhangers, and change the pace a bit.  It's not as critical that a chapter stand alone, and I don't have to keep reminding readers of what's gone before, since it will be fresher in their minds.  Concise is good.  If I could contain an idea better, I could write short stories and maybe publish in magazines.  But no... they all want to become epics.  I'm learning to prune the epic, but I probably need a machete instead of a scalpel.

Uh, my freinds are (and were) so tame compared to the ladies here described. Maybe because they are all married, or remarried. I wonder if it is an Italian thing, and the US are diffferent. Because at the same time, we are totally used and inured to scandals (imagine having Berlusconi as a leader for 20 years), and a non judgemental attitude. When Clinton was having his troubles with Monika, all Italians were laughing their heads off not believing that a political career could be affected by such a thing.

Author's Response:

I've heard much the same thing from others outside my country.  Europeans have a different attitude about sex and relationships.  I'm told the attitude is more mature and accepting, yet more private.  Here the taboos and religious morality almost make it an all or nothing subject.  It's like you either need to be prim, proper, and buttoned up about it, or loud and proud.  It's like the titilation factor never goes away.  This group of women is also very forthright about their sexuality--not Bella's style at all.

I had to look up Berlusconi.  In the US, we're often pretty ignorant about the rest of the world, sad to say.  Those kinds of scandals are nothing new to our country, even before Clinton.  Truly, the difference now is how the press reports it.  The "religious right" here tries so hard to make sure everyone in political office is righteous and upstanding in all aspects of their life, and the press is eager to find and exploit any indication that they're not.  It's pretty silly.

I must have been a dreadful mother because I never had reason to worry. My son, now over 40 and a father himself, started going out when he was finishing high school and seemed well in control. He was, actually, but what I didn't know what that he frequented a certain square and a certain bar  where he happened to meet and nod with actual gangsters. (The infamous Magliana Gang) Not the top people, but their minions. Nothing bad happened to him and while coke was circulating he never tried it.

The stories he tells now about that period of his life are incredible and some of the people he knew are now dead or in prison.

And I was totally clueless.

Author's Response:

Parenting is another area where Europe significantly differs from the US.  Here, the legal drinking age is mostly 21, and so parents tend to guard their kids and try to keep them from "going out," at least until they leave for college/uni.  It's part of that "all or nothing" mentality, and a lot of the attitudes relate to religious morality.  It results in kids being kept artificially young, or those who do go out, tend to binge drink and make bad choices.  It's like you can be "good" or "bad" and there's not much in between.

I got the same kind of upbringing you gave your son, and I did all my drinking and fooling around before I was legally allowed.  I wasn't out of control, but there were a lot of opportunities to mess up and get into trouble.  I think it was a bit more innocent back then.  I didn't have to worry about date-rape drugs in my drinks, some gang initiation putting me at risk, or any of my exploits being recorded and posted online.  Now that I'm the mother, I know there's a balance between knowing and trusting your kids, and giving them freedom to grow, and being wary of the world around them.  Europeans, it seems, have more baby steps to independence than we do.  Here, they're legally adult at 18, and they get all the rights and responsibilities (except for drinking,) dumped on them at once.  It's like they're expected to be children until that magical age, then they're free do do whatever they want.

I've been a little overprotective, but I know I'd never forgive myself if something happened to them because I left them at risk.  Samantha is only 13, so her dad wants to keep her a little girl a bit longer, while Bella is letting her take those baby steps.

Author's Response:

I confess, I chose Mary Sue because this is fan fiction.  But since you asked, I tried to think of a plausable way it could have happened.  To pass the reality litmus test, Edward didn't choose the name, Jasper did.  Jasper is the one who deals with Jenks, and when he found out about Bella's writing, he thought to tweak Edward's nose a bit.  Giving him a "perfect" mother named Mary Sue only seemed a small risk to Jasper, and he would get a laugh out of imagining Edward trying to explain it if it came up.

Author's Response:

You ask the toughest questions--love it!  Actually, I've always wondered why that sparkle was such a big deal.  I mean if it's not noticeable in indirect light or artificial light, why would direct  sunlight be so different?  I have to believe that there are methods they could use to disguise the sparkle, at least temporarily.  If they can use make-up to hide birth marks or tattoos, then they should be able to cover the sparkle.  But if not, then I'd say Emmett could still do all those extreme winter sports, covering himself with snowsuits, gloves, hats, and goggles.  Any accidental sighting could be passed off as reflections from the snow.  An Amazon expedition could be a problem, though it is a rain forest, and often in clouds, it would be hard to keep hidden all the time.  So, Emmett might resort to leading nighttime adventures--for the crazy adreneline junkies.  I can imagine him, traipsing through the jungle, with flashlights and infrared goggles, pointing out all the dangerous things that sleep during the day.

Author's Response:

I've run into someone who breeds animals, and she is convinced this hybrid is mostly impossible.  She joked about breeding a lion with an eagle to produce a griffin.  The vampire fertility is just one of those Twilight things, and we do the best we can with it.  Sometimes we just have to defy logic and reality, and go with it.  Once we swallow the existence of vampires, hybrids aren't such a leap.  Add in a cold dose of reality, and we get two parents who could outlive all of their human children.  Worse, their relationships would have to change, and that child they raised would then have to claim them as siblings, and later as children and grandchildren.

I find hen parties terrible. (Stag parties too). Since in Italy we imitate everything (Even Halloween has been adopted) maybe I must ask if they do them now. Thank God they weren't done in my time. But I did atttend a (very tame) one in New York.

Author's Response:

The bachelorette party is a relatively new thing, coming about in the last twenty or thirty years.  It's sort of a female take on the bachelor party, and usually reserved for younger women.  The bridal shower is more traditional, and it's usually a social, with household gifts for the bride.  One tradition is for the bride to save the bows and ribbons from the gifts.  She fastens them to a paper plate to use as her bouquet for the wedding rehearsal.  It's also said that every broken ribbon represents a future baby for the couple.  I had both when I got married, though my bachelorette party didn't involve any men, just lots of drinking games.

As to Halloween... since I was a kid, it seems it's gone from a minor childish holiday, to a major production rivaling Christmas, for adults.  Some people really get into Halloween, while others just roll their eyes and wonder wny.  I believe it's because so many are falling away from religious faith and Christian celebrations.  Not that I believe Halloween is a celebration of Satan and evil as some fundamentalists do.  But it is a non-religious holiday that has all the fun of parties, food, and excess, without any of the guilt and religious significance of traditional Christian celebrations.

Very serious conversation with Alice, I liked it.

Author's Response:

Thanks again.  I don't think it was ever really stated in the books how dangerous it was for normal people to know about vampires, but I'd imagine it was a lot more serious than Bella was ever led to believe.  I liked that this was a reminder that even though Alice acts like the perpetual flighty teenager, she's much older than that.
