After Renee and Phil die in a car accident on Bella’s 17th birthday. She is sent to live with her father, Charlie and brother, James in Forks WA after being separated for 10 years with no contact. Great chapter, but I'm a bit confused. Edward said to Jasper and Alice he didn't punished Bella since the first time. But as we see in his recollection he punished her a few times, by spanking her with her hand and one time with paddle.

He means he didn't go overboard with his punishment. He kept control of his temper. At this point in the story, he sees that as a good thing. He still needs to learn controlled or not, he's still abusing her.
