I think that some people push a part of themselves into the background - and remember he and Esme have a really good sex life as it is, so there was a catalist (Riley) and he just snapped and realised that esme needed to find out who was boss - she is quite a dominant person herself and I think that sometimes Carlisle let her take the lead and that's kind of ended now...
