I am glad you aren't listening to others.. with what you said the hardest part is to find the middle ground in not going over board and dragging out the story or cutting it too short and not putting enough details in..
What I as a reader would like to see is the home coming if they do get there and how they go back to a 'normal' life.. if that is where you are heading..
